John McDonnell MP, Labour’s Shadow Chancellor, responding to the Treasury Select Committee report on the Spending Review and Autumn Statement 2015, said:

“This is a damning report from a Tory chaired committee, which exposes a fundamental fact about the Chancellor – he likes to play fast and loose with both the truth and our economy.

“The report clearly states that the Chancellor deliberately tried to hoodwink parliament and the public by falsely suggesting that the improved tax forecasts was the sign of a healthier than thought economy.

“We welcome the Treasury Select Committee agreeing with Labour’s view that George Osborne’s ‘surplus rule’ is simply not credible.

“It is not too late for the Chancellor to listen to what Labour and others, have been warning for months, and change tack now, to better equip our economy for any potential global shocks. To not do so would be a grave dereliction of duty by George Osborne.”
